Protecting Your Peace - 3 Things to Remember to Stay Peaceful in a Fearful World

Image
"Have you seen the news?"  A question that can make me instantly uneasy. That's because the reason the person asking the question is asking it to begin with, is usually not because something amazing and wonderful has just happened in the world. What's that old saying: "Bad news travels halfway 'round the world before good news even gets its pants on." If a friend, co-worker, or loved one asks me that question, it's usually to share something they saw in the news that day, or the night before, that was, well, bad. They found it distressing, disturbing, or worrying, so they want to share it to offload some of that anxiety and feel comforted. Or maybe they just think I will be shocked and dismayed by it and they want to break it to me to somehow soften the impact. Either way, that bad news and all its accompanying imagery, implications and soul-crushing negativity are coming at me and my brain says, "Buckle up." The fact is, we have access t...

The Power of 100: How going all-in can tap into your identity creation superpower

Image
As humans we are imbued with the power of free will. This definitely gives us an edge over our less self-determined fellow Earthlings, but as you might have noticed, it can be a double-edged sword. In our world of ever-expanding choices, with so many interests vying for our attention practically every minute of the day, it's not surprising that we can easily fall prey to decision fatigue. To me, this is that place where we've just run low on willpower and the energy to discern and we begin to just give in to the easiest, most convenient option because, frankly, we just have no more shits to give. So, is there some default position we can adopt in at least some areas of our lives that can help us preserve that limited resource of willpower, and stand firmer in our resolve to take care of ourselves and create the positive and healthy lives we want? Yes. The answer to this ages- old question is not 42 (apologies to all you Hitchhiker's Guide fans), but 100. The power of goi...

Change Your Questions: Using Affirmations Effectively Every Day - Part I

Image
What do you think of when you think of "affirmations"? For many, the term conjures up images of someone repeating a phrase over and over, like "Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better." Certainly that is one way of viewing affirmations, and can be helpful as it is the beginning point of reprogramming some of the beliefs about yourself that you may have picked up through familial, institutional or cultural & societal messaging that we're all exposed to from a very young age. But I would suggest that there are much deeper levels to explore when it comes to affirmations that go beyond dedicated, repeated positive phrases to examining your beliefs, how those beliefs craft your identity, how your identity crafts your life, and how you can change them both for the better. Noticing self-talk patterns One way to make the most effective use of spoken affirmations, is to first spend some quality time listening for your own self-talk patterns. Part...

5 Daily Practices for a More Positive Life

Image
The truth is, the world is a pretty wonderful and beautiful place. There are amazing people doing amazing things and beautiful places and astounding events happening in nature all the time. It may seem naive to write such a thing when we all know there is simultaneously soul-crushing suffering and cruelty happening in the human world. But what I firmly believe, as you'll find as you read my posts and we get to know each other, is that the way you and I can have the biggest impact every day on that culture of suffering, violence and not-enough-ness, is to cultivate a positive and loving state of being in our own lives. There will always be challenges, but we actually can have a palpable impact on the world around us - people, situations and the general collective consciousness that we're all part of - by cultivating peace and love in our own corner of the Universe. Today, I want to share 5 ideas for you to consider incorporating into your days, or maybe leveling up if you're...
